There’s a certain kind of patience in the desert that I keep coming back to.

Not everything shows up right away.

Some things take their time.

This piece was inspired by the evening primrose, a flower that doesn’t open under the bright heat of the day. It waits until the evening. Until things quiet down a little. Until the light softens. Waiting.

I’ve always liked that about it.

It doesn’t compete for attention. It doesn’t try to outshine everything around it. It just appears when it’s ready.

When I started painting this, I almost didn’t let it stay this soft.

There’s a natural instinct to push a piece further. Add contrast. Add detail. Make it stand out more. I caught myself starting to do that here.

But the more I looked at it, the more I realized that wasn’t what this piece needed.

It needed space. It needed restraint.

It needed to feel like something you might almost miss if you weren’t paying attention, so I pulled back instead.

And that’s where Waiting really came together.

This piece is part of my desert wildflower collection, a series inspired by the quieter moments in the landscape. The ones that don’t demand attention, but still leave an impression once you notice them.

It works especially well in spaces where you want that softer presence. I often imagine it as wall decor for living rooms where the light shifts throughout the day, or as wall art for bathrooms where things feel a little more calm and reflective. It also fits naturally into home decor for bedrooms, where you don’t want something loud, but something that settles into the space. You can see prints and merchandise of this design here.
