I created Reaching for the Morning after noticing how desert plants seem to greet the first light of day long before the landscape fully wakes up. Painted one brushstroke at a time in Procreate using Apple Pencil, this piece celebrates the quiet optimism that arrives with every new morning in the Sonoran Desert.
I've realized that the desert is always reaching for the light. Once I started noticing it, I began seeing it everywhere. Agaves, saguaros, wildflowers, even the smallest plants all seem to lean toward the first warmth of the day. Reaching for the Morning grew from that simple observation.
Rather than filling the composition with detail, I chose to let the sky do much of the storytelling. The soft washes of pink, gold, and blue create a gentle backdrop that allows the agave to feel grounded and quietly hopeful. I wanted the painting to breathe, giving the light as much space as the landscape itself.
This piece feels especially suited to spaces where calm is part of everyday life. It brings a peaceful presence to a bedroom, breakfast nook, home office, or entryway, and its soft palette pairs beautifully with natural wood, warm neutrals, and contemporary Southwest décor.
